How Calendula oil can relieve eczema and dermatitis

Calendula oil is a wonderful ingredient to include in eczema and dermatitis skin care formulas because it has amazing anti-inflammatory properties which helps to reduces the swelling and the desire to scratch these areas.

Calendula comes from the marigold daisy family and is often referred to as pot marigold or garden marigold. The oil we get from Calendula officinalis is not a true extract or essential oil, it is‘infused’ oil which is produced by soaking the wilted calendula flowers in a carrier oil like olive oil for several weeks, then removing the organic material and the result is calendula infused oil.

What makes Calendula special is its skin calming and healing properties, but there’s more to calendula, it is also renowned for its anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, astringent, antifungal, antiviral, and immunostimulant properties making it useful for disinfecting and treating minor wounds, conjunctivitis, cuts, scrapes, chapped or chafed skin, bruises, burns, athlete’s foot, acne, yeast infections, bee stings, diaper rashes, and other minor irritations and infections of the skin.

Calendula also stimulates the production of collagen which assists in the healing process.

Calendula is so gentle you can actually eat the flowers in salads or they can be used to add colour to cheeses and sauces so oils or creams infused with calendula oil are very safe to use even on the most sensitive skin types.

Calendula is especially effective when healing slow healing skin conditions like eczema and dermatitis and it is also very useful for nappy rash, irritated and delicate skin.

We include Calendula oil in our Active Manuka Honey cream.
