What causes 75% of women to have yeast infection

Studies show that 3 out of 4 women will develop a yeast infection at some time and there are numerous factors that can contribute to a candida albicans, thrush or yeast infection.

The first is sugar; a high intake of sugar actually feeds the yeast causing it to multiply out of control.

The second is a low level of acidophidilus which usually counteracts the sugar levels in the body so taking acidophilus yoghurt can help to lower the levels of available sugars.

The third factor is antibiotics which are a major contributor to yeast infection. Ironically, taking antibiotics for another very common vaginal infection; bacterial vaginisis can lead to a yeast infection. To many women this will seem a vicious circle of unpleasant infections, with the treatment of one condition leading to the development of another.

Yeasts, fungi and bacteria are all part of the natural flora that appears all over our bodies, they will have higher populations in different parts of our bodies due to the different 'mini climates' that we all have.

Areas like the face and hands which are out in the open and more exposed to wind and sun will be drier, while other parts which are always covered provide warm, dark and humid conditions which are ideal for the growth of fungi and yeasts.

Areas such as the armpits, folds in the skin and especially vagina's are very prone to the development and multiplication of yeasts.

Normally there is a healthy and natural balance of fungi, bacteria and yeasts, however it only takes a small change in what we eat or apply to our bodies to upset this delicate balance and get an overgrowth of yeast or bacterial infection.

When either overgrowth of bacteria as in bacterial vaginosis or yeast as candida albicans are present it is important to treat both infections at the same time to break the circle of reinfection.

One such natural product able to counter both bacteria and yeast simultaneously is the essential oil of New Zealands Manuka plant. Manuka oil is formulated in natural cream, oil and soap products which make up a comprehensive yeast and bacterial infection treatment pack.
