Antibiotic resistant superbugs

According to Natural News there have been more recent outbreaks of antibiotic resistant bacteria among new-born children in India.

According to the report around 85,000 infant deaths are caused by antibiotic resistant bacteria in India annually.

There are several reasons for these high numbers including poor sanitation, overcrowding in hospitals and over prescription of antibiotics. Antibiotics are freely sold over the counter in India and despite the efforts to prevent their overuse experts say that a large percentage of bacterial strains are now resistant to all drugs.

Problems initiated in India are now spreading to other parts of the world with super bugs becoming alarmingly widespread.

A further effect is the widespread practice of adding antibiotics to animal feed in India including chicken feed, a practice which is now banned in USA.

NDM1 (New Delhi metallo-beta-lactamase-1) is an enzyme that has been found in many of these "superbugs" and although experts have been warning us of the implications of over-prescription of antibiotics for years, the practice is still alarmingly widespread in the West as well as in developing countries.

Such practice has led to many researchers to investigate alternative antibacterial compounds found in nature and there are a wide range to chose from including garlic, turmeric, cinnamon, and many essential oils as well as the widely recognized Manuka honey from New Zealand.

Manuka honey has many properties not present in other natural antibacterial products including its ability to be easily absorbed through the mouth as well as via the digestive system.

However a word of warning, no form of honey should be fed to infants under one year of age as their digestive system cannot process the inert forms of bacteria that are naturally found in honey. Older children and adults can digest honey including the strongly antibacterial Manuka UMF honey without problems.

In USA 23,000 people reportedly die each year from infections of resistant bacterial strains and the problem will only get worse if the over-prescription of antibiotics continues.

Honey has an almost infinite shelf life – it has been found in the tombs of Pharaohs in remarkably good condition – so it is a great product to have on hand, possibly in the back of the cupboard as a backup if you or your family ever become infected with a resistant strain of bacteria.
